ASP.net stands for active server pages.NET, which was developed by Microsoft in 2002. It is a web application framework which allows the programmers to build dynamic web applications or web services using compiled languages like VB and C#.

ASP.net allows users to build very sophisticated applications by making use of visual studio. In early days of web the web sites were not dynamic and hence to make them auto updating enhanced and to make them dynamic ASP.net is used.

ASP.net is a very effective web application framework due to following reasons-

ASP.net involves compiled code which makes applications run faster, and at development stage provides more design time errors. There is much improved run time error handling, using try catch blocks. There are metaphors such as controls and events which are similar to Microsoft windows application. An extensive set of control box and class library available which allows rapid building of applications. These layout controls on a page is much easier.

ASP.net reflects multi language capabilities; this allows web pages to be coded in chrome, VB.net etc.ASP .net has the ability to cache the whole page or some parts of the page to improve it. To separate business logic from presentation, ASP.net can use the code behind development model. Session state in ASP.net can be saved in Microsoft SQL server database. This can be done either on the same machine or different one and thus ensures that the session values are not lost when the web server is reset or ASP.net is recycled.

ASP.net has an easy deployment feature. The configuration information is built in and hence there is no need to register components. One of the best features of ASP.net is that it monitors the pages and applications running on it and if it finds any memory leakage or illegal activities, it immediately destroys the activity and restarts itself.

Hence ASP.net is a global framework used to create world class web sites and applications.
